Raja Rava Varma Biography

Father of Modern Indian Art bringing Indian Mythology to life

through Classic Realism and Traditional Themes

Raja Ravi Varma was a pioneering Indian painter widely regarded as one of the greatest artists in the history of Indian art. Born on April 29, 1848 into an aristocratic
family in Kilimanoor, in present-day Kerala. Varma showed artistic talent from a young age. Encouraged by his uncle and later trained under professional painters,
he mastered the techniques of European realism, including the use of perspective, oil painting, and anatomical accuracy - an approach rare in Indian art at the time.

What set Ravi Varma apart was his ability to blend Western artistic techniques with Indian themes. He became especially renowned for his vivid and emotive portrayals
of scenes from Hindu mythology, particularly from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. His paintingshumanized gods and goddesses, giving divine figures a more
relatable and accessible form. This was a transformative moment for Indian culture, as his works were widely disseminated as prints, making art available to the masses.

In 1894, he founded a printing press in Bombay (now Mumbai), which produced affordable oleographs of his paintings. This innovation greatly expanded his reach and
influence, helping to define visual culture in India during the colonial period. His iconic depictions of Lakshmi, Saraswati, and other deities  became household images
across the country.  His Galaxy of Musicians is possibly his most widely known work.

Raja Ravi Varma received numerous honors during his lifetime, including the Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal from the British Raj. Despite facing criticism from traditionalists
and later modernists, his legacy remains significant for democratizing art and shaping the visual imagination of a nation. He passed away on October 2, 1906 in Attingal,
Kerala but his work continues to inspire generations of artists and admirers around the world.  If you are looking to bring that same atmosphere into your home or office,
consider adding a hand-painted Hieronymus Bosch reproduction to your collection. Our museum-qaulity oil painting reproductions are meticulously painted with the
same light, color, emotion, and detail to accuracy of his masterpieces.
